Ett stort FN-möte om världsekonomin hålls i dagarna i New York.
More Democracy the Cure for Broken System, UN Says

The United Nations General Assembly kicked off a three-day conference on the world financial crisis Wednesday with calls for a substantial overhaul of the decades-long model under which the world’s richest countries set the terms of global fiscal and trade policy.

"At this critical moment, we must all join our efforts to prevent the global crisis, with its myriad faces, from turning into a social, environmental and humanitarian tragedy,” General Assembly President Miguel D’Escoto told attendees.
It is neither humane nor responsible to build a Noah’s Ark only to save the existing economic system, leaving the vast majority of humanity to their fate and to suffer the negative effects of a system imposed by an irresponsible but powerful minority,” D’Escoto said. "We must take decisions that affect us all collectively to the greatest extent possible.”

Det verkar som att det finns något sunt och genuint med detta möte, inte för att jag på något sätt är insatt i de konkreta förslagen på åtgärder, men om man lägger ihop ovanstående uttalande att man borde se till mer än en liten elits intresse plus detta:

The summit is considered by some observers to mark a key moment for the future of the United Nations, particularly in terms of its role in forging a new, more democratic roadmap for global financial and economic governance.

Goldman to make record bonus payout

Anställda hos Goldman Sachs kan se fram mot de största bonusutbetalningarna i bolagets 140-åriga historia. Detta efter att USA’s befolkning fått gå in och inteckna sin egen och sina barns framtid för att rädda dom från konkurs!
Som Stacy Herbert sa: "This is just too awesome to be true.  I am still uncertain whether to laugh or cry.”
Det är dock för osmakligt för att man ska kunna skratta åt det.

Från democracynow.org:

Nomi Prins:
It is possible because our government has chosen to effectively give Goldman the money to do that, in a number of different ways. One is the $10 billion that it got through the TARP program…

The bigger amount of money that has gone to Goldman has come through $12.9 billion from the AIG bailout that went straight to Goldman, its biggest counterparty; $28 billion worth of FDIC-backed guaranteed debt, meaning the FDIC put up a program last fall, and it said, "For banks that deal with consumers”—not banks that deal with multibillion-dollar companies or investors, but people—"we will provide guarantees for debt,” which means that those companies can raise debt to help consumers cheaply. Goldman said, "Alright, fine, we’ll take some of that.” And they took $28 billion worth of that, and they have up to $35 billion that they can take under the FDIC program that was never meant for a company like Goldman Sachs.

But it’s a lot, a lot of money. It could basically pay for every single mortgage in this country and healthcare and subsidizing student loans. So when it wants to, the government can come up with a way to subsidize what it wants to subsidize. It chose to subsidize the banking industry.

The Greatest Non-Apology of All Time

Lloyd Blankfein från Goldman Sachs:

"While we regret that we participated in the market euphoria and failed to raise a responsible voice, we are proud of the way our firm managed the risk it assumed on behalf of our client before and during the financial crisis,” he said.
Matt Taibbi:
First of all, generally speaking, when one apologizes for having done a bad thing (like for instance destroying the world economy), it is good form to wait at least until the end of the sentence to start bragging again.
